Giri Narasimhan

Professor

Dr. Giri is a professor in the Knight Foundation School of Computing and Information Sciences at FIU, where he is the Director of the Academy for CS Education, and also heads the Bioinformatics Research Group (BioRG). He holds a bachelor’s degree from the Indian Institute of Technology-Bombay and a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His research interests include Bioinformatics, Data Science, Machine Learning, Algorithms, Theoretical Computer Science, and Computer Science Education. He has about 200 publications to his credit and close to $20M in funding as a principal investigator or a co-investigator. His work has been funded by the NSF, NIH, NIJ, DoD, FDOH, USDA, and private industry. He spearheaded the design and implementation of the multi-disciplinary Master’s in Data Science and AI at FIU. He was the Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Studies in the College of Engineering and Computing from 2009-15. He has received the FIU Top Scholar Award for Dedicated Mentoring (2021) and Engagement Beyond the Classroom (2023), and the FIU Senate Distinguished Faculty Award for Advising and Mentorship (2022).
