For Students Who Want to Shape the World

Discover what is possible today in computing and tech with Break Through Tech.

Did you know that only 18% of women earn computer science bachelor’s degrees in the United States? Despite the high job demand, pay, and projected growth, computer science remains a male-dominated field in the U.S. (computerscience.org)

Beyond gender, we recognize that additional institutional barriers to access exist for specific groups — such as Black, Latina, Indigenous, low-income, and first-generation undergraduate college women, and students with marginalized gender identities. Break Through Tech’s vision is to elevate the voices of these groups and grow their numbers within the tech community.

Can you picture yourself as a Computer Programmer? Software Engineer? Web Designer? Video Game Developer? Data Scientist? These are just a few of the plethora of options available for women and minoritized communities. The possibilities are endless as computing intertwines into all disciplines (arts, life sciences, business, and more), and we are here to help you explore and follow the path less traveled.

Your future in tech starts here. Your chance to make a difference can start today.

Come join us at Break Through Tech and we will help you tear down the barriers, open doors, and reshape the industry.

Who is Break Through Tech Miami for?

Our mission is to prepare more college women (cis and trans) and nonbinary individuals with the tools and undergraduate education they need to succeed in the tech world beyond the university walls. We are especially interested in advancing Black, Latina, and Indigenous, low-income, and first-generation college women who are interested in computing and tech. While these are the audiences we serve with our programs, we are always excited to meet allies who support our work and would like to participate in other ways.

Do I need to be an FIU student?

Currently, to participate in our programs, you should be an FIU freshman, sophomore, or transfer student, or an MDC student.

Do I need to pay any fees to be part of Break Through Tech?

Nope! Break Through Tech is free of cost, and we actually offer cool incentives to attend our events.

I don’t have a tech background, is that okay?

Absolutely! We welcome all students that have an interest in the field. Our goal is to propel you forward in the computing and tech industry.
